Mimi’s Sandwiches 3-Ways

Story and Recipe

By: Jaime Cummings

My great grandmother had a farm in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. They grew most of their food and butchered their meat. Reuben Dameron was the man who plowed my great grandfathers field with a mule. My mom (Shirley), as a child, would follow Reuben with the plow and right behind her would be her pet chicken, Top Knotty.
My grandmother with her small kitchen and very little counter space would whip up the best biscuits and dumplings. My great grandmother, mamaw, would go out and grab a chicken, ring its neck and serve the best stewed chicken and dumplings. It’s a dish that would make you cry!
Questions for the Table
Sunday dinner should be a time for you and your family to enjoy each other’s company without distractions. We know how hard that is, which is why we introduced three questions at dinner to engage the whole family. This exercise will reveal stories and details about your loved ones that you never knew – stories you will cherish.
Try it yourself! Use the questions below at your next Sunday Supper!
  1. What was your favorite sandwich growing up?
  2. Did your loved one ever make a unique combination sandwich for you?
  3. Currently, what’s your favorite thing to eat for lunch now?
